All cats that are not required for breeding should be neutered/spayed at approximately six months old.  The advantages of neutering/spaying are many.  Neutered male cats do not roam as far, therefore reducing the chances of them being involved in road traffic accidents.  Fighting amongst males is much reduced when neutered, reducing the risk of infected wounds through bites and the spread of disease's such as FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FELV (Feline Leukaemia Virus)

An un-neutered male marks his territory with strong smelling urine, this is called spraying.  He is liable to do this in the house as well as the garden if un-neutered.  A healthy female cat can have up to three litters of kittens each year with 5 or 6 kittens in each litter.  That means 18 good caring homes have to be found for just one cats kittens.

For people on low income, housing benefit, senior citizens, full time students etc, we can help with the cost of neutering/spaying your cat.  Part paid vouchers are available for people meeting this criteria.  At present a voucher can be issued with a value of £15:00 for neutering a male cat and £20:00 for spaying a female cat.  The voucher is then given to the veterinary surgeon who will deduct the amount from your bill.  Please note: the outstanding balance is payable by the client, not Scunthorpe & District Cats Protection

If you live in the area our Branch covers and you would like to find out if you qualify, please ring Helen our neutering/spaying officer on 01724 783555 or e-mail. Helen with voucher as the subject line in your e-mail.  Please state your full name, address, telephone number, postcode and what benefits you are receiving.   Also please state the age of your cat and if it is a male or female.

We can also help with the trapping and neutering/spaying of feral cats.  We have several humane traps which catch the cats without harming them.  It is important to keep any feral colonies of cats under control, especially with regard to breeding as they can soon become unmanageable.  If you require any help or advice regarding feral cats please contact us using the details given above.
